This case against Unocal Corporation alleges that that the California oil company illegally monopolized and attempted to monopolize Reformulated Gasoline (RFG) that complied with standards established by the California Air Resources Board ("CARB"), and that Unocal entered into a combination, forbidden by law, to accomplish that purpose. Plaintiffs allege that Unocal's monopoly and unfair practices arising from its subversion of the state regulatory standard-setting procedures relating to low emissions RFG forced California consumers to pay artificially inflated prices for CARB-compliant summertime reformulated gas.
The case, which was pending in the United States District Court, Central District of California, was recently settled for $48 million.
